I do have a question about leveling routing, since I test a lot of routing on Horde side in the beta, what do you compare levelnig time with when questing vs grinding, for example as hunter I count killing 3 mobs of equal level per minute as a good guideline for how long a level should take roughly and then decide if I think what I did was good or not. So my question is really, what other metrics do you use to value your routing?

I mean no offense but this kind of a simplistic view of the leveling process.

First you have to figure out what you're going for:
-Is it a route for launch day or a general route?
-What class are we talking?
-PvP or PvE server?

Then, you can look at the big picture and determine which zones you need to hit in the various level ranges. For example, if you're planning on running on a pvp server, prioritizing shimmering flats and the early Nesingwary quests might be a good idea so you can avoid as much pvp as possible.
After that its just a matter of chaining the zones and the quests in the zones efficiently.

As far as grinding goes... you also have to consider mob density, difficulty, competition, etc.
I personally try to avoid long grinding for the sake of grinding as much as possible. There are quests that are grind heavy, but also there are mobs that have a low chance of dropping a quest item like the Flayed Demon Skin or the Outhouse key. Also there're mobs that give you rep with factions which can unlock extra quests down the line, and so on.

As far as metrics go... you can just compare your time to others and to your past runs and figure out what works and what doesn't.

I think a 5-Man will be faster than Solo, Hunter-Solo could be faster. Maybe.

Classic Beta
Gnome Mage 1-10
1 hour, 31 minutes

Done with 1-10 route now, could be <1:30 with good rng, but better to just route further levels

The local repack I try stuff on still has rested xp on which is annoying, can anyone clarify how to disable it? I know this is on the top of the post, but can anyone specify exactly which file it is and the directory path to it? I dont have the server up myself so I need to forward this to the guy who does.

Ctrl + F to search for these values (in the Mangos config file):

Set all 3 values to 0.

MaNGOS is the folder where the unzipped pack is located, "mangosd.conf" is the file you want to edit - it's directly in that folder. Edit the values of the lines without the "#" at the start.

Been sitting around 2 hours myself for awhile now as druid on beta. Skinning sure slows things down a lot, and jesus christ inventory space is a filthy old hag when it comes to those early *gather 6 different things from the mobs over there* quests..I've found that when a bag doesn't drop I basically have to completely give up on grey drops, and then I cannot afford a new white staff. Been trying a variety of things. I've given up on first aid and buying food because I simply cannot afford it..Will be interested in giving your video a look.

Here you go, hope you find it informative. Will be happy to answer any questions. Detailed videos about the run are on the channel as well if youre interested.

Obviously its a simplistic view of leveling when it comes to 3/minute, but I simply figured i'd use it as a baseline for how fast that level takes in very good circumstances, obviously you account for area and grind otherwise, but if it should take 70min killing equal mobs and it takes 2hours, then you can most likely find a lot of things that can be improved upon almost instantly.

There are certain areas like 28-30 as horde where its seemingly mostly green quests&mobs unless you do few quests to advance those chains and start killing mobs without a negative experience modifier, and thats when I feel grinding is far superior, there are a lot of caves on classic atm that has incredibly high respawn rate, you clear like half of it or so as hunter and it starts backspawning already. Examples of those caves are both caves in Stonetalon (Kobold in south and Windshear Crag mine) and also harpy cave in Thousand Needles. Also the Demon area in ashenvale is proving pretty good when it comes to raw kill exp at those levels, just awful drops instead

Managed to hit 1:56 at last..but I can see why you have so much money, finding a bag from like the first lvl 3 mobs lol. Your route is also very different from mine I can see. I never ding 6 before hitting BH village, but you're just as fast there as I am basically, gotta see if I can improve on that..

I'll run this route a few more times (also without a bag, to see if it makes that much of a difference in time). But I don't think a few more minutes will make a major difference. With the release of classic it will be too crowded for a sub-2hr run I feel. I'm going to focus on the 10-20 leveling more from now on I think, because I feel thats where you'll really be able to get 'ahead' of the pack :)

Thanks, we got it working.
Can work on my 1-40 in a slow nice pace now :)

Last 1-10 screenshot for now. Will be moving to 10-20 next. Route went perfect, there was some competition (which is expected to be worse at launch ofcourse). But, Classic WoW beta, Tauren druid 1-10 in 1 hour and 48 minutes.

Using the GM command ".god off" (which is the command shown in the screenshot) is fine because characters on admin accounts on repacks by default cannot die, and leaving godmode on would make for an unfair run. The command serves to make the run closer to an actual server run. I'd say that his run counts.

But if its shown there, doesnt it mean that before dinging he had god on?

Several people use a macro that has ".god off /played", like @Jokerdtv does in his runs, just so they don't forget to turn it off when they checked their played each level. It displays "Mode [GOD]: OFF" even if god mode is already off when you press it. I doubt @SlyngeL cheated, you can see him using the macro in his 1-10 video.

Alright, thats probably the case. Thanks for clarifying.

Can confirm.

Looks like Loch Modan to Darkshore and back again isn't too bad

Is it on classic beta or private or repack server?

Ooh nice run dude!
Question: are u using any macros to target ur last target and shoot etc? if so do you mind sharing? u have a very nice 1-6 run ^^ keep it up.

Yes

1.12 client: /script TargetLastTarget()
1.13 client: /targetlasttarget

Also use a pet attack mouseover:

1.12 client:
/script if UnitCanAttack("player","mouseover") then TargetUnit("mouseover");PetAttack();TargetUnit("playertarget"); else PetAttack(); end
/cast Dash
/cast Dive

Haven't made one for the beta (cause I'm not in), but it's not hard to find one with a tiny bit of googling

Got back to the hunter thing again... really thought about the mage aoe grind stuff but i think its too risky on release date.
Did the cooking quest and mostly just standard Alameth-Starbreeze-Banethil routing, which isnt really that hard if u grind enough random mobs before you go in there. Most of the times i kite mobs around trees and then they die easy.

Aegnora, Hunter, 1h32m18s, Vanilla Repack

Looking forward to 1-20

I dont know about aegnor, but bornlesszero who does druid speedrunning through teldrassil got videos on youtube for his full runs. JokerdTV got videos of dun morogh mage speedrunning and judgement has paladin videos of elwynn forest. depending on your class these routes may ofc be modified.
