I belong to the first group. I always try to come up with serious, lore friendly names since I like the sense of immersion it creates.
Reminder to all people here that every server will have leeroyjenkins as an available name on launch.
So I've composed a list of about 80 names on a word doc. On launch I will be logging into my two accounts simultaneously to reserve as many as I can. My goal here is to keep the name reserved while I design my characters without chancing that the name will be taken. So the two accounts will make it easy for me to create a character on my main account, click delete on the alt account to free up the name, and then slam create so that no one can take it. For most of my friends who don't have this option, I'll also use my secondary account to reserve for them to ensure no one takes their names while they are creating characters. In preparation I will be running all of these names through a retail check to see which ones are prohibited and permanently blocked.
As for names, I want to choose things that are short and memorable. Nothing incredibly creative or unique, just plain names like: Boom, Lion, Titan, Zeus, Apache, Outlast, Predator, Vast, War, Jumanji... Etc etc etc. Simple, straight forward names. My list contains fantasy names, sounds, and general vocabulary (like the name Adversity). I have also taken this list and categorized the names into the classes that I feel would suit them best... My warlock list contains about 15 names : Hades, Doomsday, Zoolock, Lock... My goal with my names is to be remembered. Whether you like my name or hate it, I want you to be able to pronounce it and recognize me when you see it. Needless to say, I wont be using the "randomize" feature.
I think that allowing us to reserve one to two characters completely by creating them and naming them would be a great preorder bonus. I'd love to have my characters created and named for login day. Nothing like spamming through stuff on login day just to findout your hair is 1 shade off or you chose the wrong face 10 levels later. I also think preordering (despite the fact that they say Classic will be inclusive in the cost of retail) would have been their best method to measure the level of interest for the game and in turn launch with the appropriate amount of servers.
Ryder (for my druid), Selexin and then words that start with 'Re' and are relevant to the class/theme. Redoubt, Recoil, Recuperate, Reaping, Request etc. etc.
Although I did like my female Undead rogue name: Breezyknees.

Been Umbra since Morrowind and the battle weary orc in the hills of Suran who wields Umbra sword. All variations of the name are most likely taken so i will have to figure something out for Classic
I'm all over the place when trying to come up with a name. I usually overthink it until I become frustrated with myself and just settle with something random.
This is me, but I name myself after objects in my room. Takes out the overthinking portion.

I guess I'm more in a contemporary category. I don't take the game or its lore into consideration much at all, and focus more on a word that I feel represents me while also sounding cool as a name. An example is Støv, which was my Orc Rogue back in WotLK. Støv means dust in Norwegian, so it's perhaps a bit mysterious as not everyone will understand it.
I love words and the combination of letters, so I'm a sucker for short names with a combination of letters that fit well next to each other. Also, I'm particularly picky about capitalized letters - so even if I find a cool name, I might scrap it just because it starts with a T and not a t, etc :p
I've become obsessed with loose leaf tea, so I'm trying to find a name that is tea related, at least vaguely.
I think option 1 is the way to go. Just make sure it's easy to pronounce in case you want to raid. Avoiding non-english alphabet letters might also be good idea.

It's Spanish, but Starbucks had a type of coffee called Casi Cielo, which was in my cup at the time.

This is the kind of dedication I appreciate.
The way I did it was make notes whenever I came up with something that sounds cool. Eventually, you will find something that clicks, just takes time!
This is what I do as well, just for fun. Been doing that for a along time, actually. Have a list of maybe 10-15 names, which would suit different class, or general mood of the character.
Song names idea is nice, I like it. Even curious to go over my playlist right now.
I have to go with serious, lore friendly/believeable names. Sometimes I wish I didn't so there was more clarity as to what alts are mine in guilds, etc.
I like the idea of lore friendly names, but whenever I try to play a character with one, I end up not really feeling any connection to it. So instead I go with a name like Meatlumps, where I can just say that it's their nickname.
If I have to choose between the three categories I would fall mostly in the "serious" category. But I would occasionally lean to the "cool looking" as well.
My main character will be named Slocain which is an anagram for my first name. If I can reserve my first name then I'll make a serious thought about using that though
It's either a real name or something that just sounds cool. Very rarely I'll go for the funny names and even then I only use those for twinks. Just in case some of my favourite names will be taken by other players I already prepared a list of other names so I don't have to spend all time to come up with new ones.

That's a good idea. I should probably come up with a list. I'm just kind of banking on the fact that I will be able to reserve the ones that I want. Although, if I can't get the ones I want, I might just go to a different server. Hmm...decisions, decisions.
Ive always used these three names Caspus, Cyne, and Kms
Caspus is what ive named all my paladins since 2011. I used to Roleplay a lot on RP private servers aswell as live before this. Caspius was main characters last name majority of the time. When I started to play on vanilla private servers more seriously it evolved into Caspus.
Kms is the gaming and forum name i've gone by for majority of the games i've played since I was little kid. Funny enough it wasn't me being edgy. Back then it didn't really mean anything to most people until later on it was abbreviated into kill myself. 7 year old me just thought it rolled off the tongue well so it stuck with me.
Cyne is my non-paladin name. I like names that start with C and my character on northdale with caspus got banned so I was forced to think of somthing new. The sign by ace of base was playing on spotify and so Cyne was born. I really like this name because whenever I logged on everyone goes "I saw the cyne" and when we do drunk raids we all sing ace of base when we wipe.
In my case is 1 and 2 ( never 3 ). It depends what I am creating exactly, sometimes I like serious feeling of the game - full immersion and stuff like that. But in the start of Classic I think I will use my current nickname ( so it will be number 2 ) : )
