Oversized Signatures...

Listen guys I haven't put any restrictions in so far because I thought it wasn't necessary and that people here were mature enough to know not to do stuff like this - but if you're going to be annoying and make your sigs massive on purpose to troll people here who have complained then I'll just fucking delete them, end of.

If you have a big sig, resize your images or I'll do it for you (by deleting them).

Thought this wouldn't be necessary but the way people are responding to this thread is kind of pissing me off.

Duly noted, and fixed.

Jon Bloodspray Believe it or not I actually cut out over half the image to make it more forum-appropriate!

I can understand that signatures are a great place to get creative. But some of the signatures are just annoying and also hurt the site itself. For example we have an active community member that has an image in the signature that is crazy large (dimensions: 3,510px × 1,272px; file-size: 320.5 KB) Even though it is scaled down by the css-rule in the image-tag, it takes up most of the space inside the viewport. If all users would have such an image in their signature the site becomes heavy for people with slow internet-speeds or browsing with an mobile-device.

Like in all growing communities, there is some point where something like public available rules or guidelines are needed. Most of the forums from the time vanilla was "fresh" had such rules, like signatures are not allowed to be larger then 3-5 rows of text (at default size) or max 100px in height.

Frantically opens paint to check dimensions

Edit: I scoured the forum and found who you were referring to. TBH the sig in question isn't close to obnoxious on desktop. Mobile may be a different question.

320kb is absurd for a signature.

If I may throw in my own opinion, I have always thought signatures have been annoying, and that they just make the topic board look cluttered and ugly. Maybe I'm a bit cynical, but to me the signatures just feels completely unrelated to anything.

Luckily, there is an option to turn them off here, which has been all good for me.

Turned display of users signatures off, it is weird to not have it - but it also makes it much more compact and less jarring. I'll try it on this setting for a while, some people definitely overdo it, or have signatures that do not fit the website theme/feel.

The small banners that most people used until now were perfectly fine for me. But lately half of the page consists of these overblown and repeating signatures.

For now i've also deactivated them.

Yes, I am using 2 of the slim banners provided on barrens.chat - as they were thematically appropriate, and minimalist.

as soon as i signed up here i went off and edited a nice pic i found on some online photo editing site. you dont even need photoshop to make it look decent these days. ive always loved the feel of old ass forums like these and its gr8 now im not just a fucking noob and using mspaint with that old Chiller font on a background of some storm or abstract pattern thinking i was the shit.

having signatures nd userbars just adds to the nostalgia that we're all here for tbh

I always turn signatures off on every forum I have a account on. Signatures never have anything useful in them and people generally tend to mis-use them as well.

Just want to take a moment to realize that the fact that we're having issues over forum sig size is a very.... vanilla issue to have a discussion about :)

Good times... good times :)

i honestly dont see the issue. internet forum sigs have always been ridiculous. these are still some pretty tame examples. besides, as others have said, you can choose to not see them. i dont see why we should start policing people over something the offended already have the power to disable.

I love making nice signatures; each time I switch my choice for a main (*sigh*) I update my signature accordingly. Is this what you guys consider big?

I have no idea what you are talking about :)

But in all serious, I generally try to keep any forum sig to sub 800. 500 - 680px to me is the sweet spot of being able to make something cool looking whilst not cluttering the pages too much. I personally love seeing sigs around it takes me back to older forum days when I actually decided to learn to use photoshop, brushes, filters etc to come up with things. I feel it's a lost art in the Discord era :(

I have always hated these big ass signatures which just don't make any sense. Yeah, cool that you have made it in photoshop, but make it smaller so it doesn't take so much space.

Look at this -

The image is bigger than the post...

My add blocker allows me to right click images and block, so I can leave peoples signatures on, but block the larger ones
