I am so going to roll a Mage now that this solid guide exists. Good to have reliable info from someone who plays on pserver.
Finesse Thanks, but you almost seem sarcastic..
I wanted to add a disclaimer at the top about the information and videos being private server but if Blizzard stays in line with their stated plans 99% of this should carry over to classic. All we can really do is speculate until beta, though.
I’ve heard something about Starving & Rabid Bonepaw in Desolace not giving XP in Vanilla, but couldn’t confirm. It would be a shame, though, as that is a very viable spot with good Beast density in between the hyenas that all classes can farm for 30-40.
Hah I didn’t mean to come across as sarcastic!
No hate for pservers here man what would you trust more - the ramblings of some guy who last played vanilla over a decade ago or someone who is playing it right now?
Sure classic may have some minor changes here and there but that doesn’t stop, as u say, 99% of it being relevant. Especially on a macro level like this guide u have written!
More updates!
-Tidied up formatting (fixed some spacing issues, finished linking classic wowhead abilities, moved some notes to different sections to better centralize information)
-“Finshed” adding mobs (10+ new mobs posted that made the cut, still need test 2)
To Do:
-Add 1-40 Wand Progression (planning to do Horde for sure, perhaps I’ll have time to add Alliance too...)
-Add Contention Notes for each spot (how likely you are to run into someone else farming a particular spot)
-Add Videos to showcase each spot’s mob density, redo dungeon videos
- Add Items of interest for each mob grinding location (perhaps I’ll have time to add AoE farming mobs’ drops of interest too..)
Levels: 53-54
Dire Maul: East
Whip Lasher
Ideal Professions: Herbalism (nodes)
Prerequisites: None
This will be the place to be as a Mage pre ZG and you can start here as early as 52 with little issue. As with Maraudon pulls, at lower levels you should try to avoid doing more than 2 packs at a time. There is a potential bonus Dusty Tome near the Southwest corner of the bottom level where the mobs are. You can see me check for it with my cursor at 2:37 in the video below. A big portion of every DME guides are wrong because the scripting of this instance of private servers is far from accurate, here is a video I made a video about this issue:
https://youtu.be/XZBfm8C29Ss
As a bonus, this video proves that the server I'm playing on features the Blizzlike version of the instance:
https://youtu.be/M3zA1qH02VA
Long story short:
So anyway, the section about DME is not correct :P
Infra thanks again for that info. I’m actually the guy that was discussing this with you on reddit! (Ynglmao)
I’m also in the process of editing this guide to be more in line with strategies for Classic launch whereas a lot of this was written based on my experiences from Northdale when the server had already been up for months (completely different environment than a fresh server, particularly classic as the population will be ridiculous at launch for I’d imagine every server).
I’d like to point out again that’s it’s difficult to speculate on how exactly DM:E will be managed for Classic but I’d assume they’d stay as close to possible to the original scripting.
E: now that we can actually say server names without fear of punishment, what server was used for your video? Maybe I can find time to level another Mage and test DM: E routes with the correct scripting myself. Your talent choices for that farm in particular are a bit odd, especially Frostbite.
E2: just seeing your post on reddit saying you had your own server. Care to elaborate on what’s required to set this up (I’m just simply looking to test things on a server with scripting as close to actual vanilla as possible and that would be really nice for speed running testing also!) or if you know of any public servers with the proper DM: E scripts?
OwnedCore has a subforum for repacks of servers like LH and Nost etc you might want to look there for a specific server with the scripting you desire?
E: https://www.ownedcore.com/forums/world-of-warcraft/world-of-warcraft-emulator-servers/
teebling thanks! I did a small bit of research for break (double shift today) and I had no idea how easy it was to get this up.. this is a much more effective/less time consuming way to test things with the admin commands, holy hell.
Well, I’ve got a lot planned now lmao!
Woops sorry I just realized you guys reacted to my post :P
I'm glad to help you sorting things out, have fun testing anything you want to do on your server, this is a true gift :P
I'd like to adress this though:it’s difficult to speculate on how exactly DM:E will be managed for Classic but I’d assume they’d stay as close to possible to the original scripting.
Well we do know how this instance will be scripted, it will be 100% Blizzard as Blizzard will use the backed up code of 1.12 from 2006 :P

No, that’s the logical assumption for sure but nothing is 100% (not even their release date).
I think particularly with DM: E and the fact that it’s supposed to be available at launch (this point isn’t 100% either), there is definitely the possibility to have various aspects of the dungeon changed because of the potential for gold acquisition more so than exp. This is a heavily discussed topic as a lot of people feel the instance is over the top and I’ve seen multiple private servers make changes to the dungeon to attempt to somewhat limit the farm.
To clarify, I don’t think they would change things about the dungeon to attempt to “balance” but to say we know 100% anything besides they’re working on a classic server is just wrong, we’re all speculating based on what they’ve said so far (which is extremely limited).
E; I’d prefer not to dive too far into discussion of what they will/won’t do in this thread but honestly, thanks a bunch again for pointing out the bad scripting for Northdale DM: E.
Looking great man, so much detail being added in
! Keep up the great work.
Great guide! Two pieces of feedback:
1. I would add Nightbane Vile Fangs as a prime AOE spot for levels 28-32. Not very contested, this was a great spot for me to practice my AOE early. https://classicdb.ch/?npc=206
2. I recommend only 2/3 points in Improved Blizzard. The 65% slow is nice, but it does not last very long, and it overwrites the much longer 50% slow from COC. Leaving Improved Blizzard at 2/3 results in a 50% slow that does not overwrite COC.

1. I’ve updated my guide recently to reflect strategies for Classic launch. Expected population is massive and anyone who’s experienced private server launches with massive pops knows first hand how difficult it is to AoE early; spots are heavily contested and low level AoE is extremely mana intensive. Just one person from the opposing faction can easily ruin your attempt to pull a pack and then you’re left with an inefficient spec for questing. Respec costs are far too expensive to swap specs often. Because of this, I’d highly recommend a more single target friendly spec and heavy emphasis on questing until at least 40 when you’ve already secured your mount, you have Ice Barrier to help with pulls, and your options for AoE spots are much more plentiful and even then it’ll be hard to find good spots with so many people actively leveling.
2. I did mention 2/3 Imp Blizzard as an option for people newer to Mages or AoE farming but 3/3 is pretty vastly superior with 3/3 Permafrost once you get used to it as it allows you to easily cast 2 full length Blizzards before the pull reaches you, when your Frost Nova will be back off CD and you can repeat 2 more full length Blizzard channels.
Thank you for making this guide. I have it book marked and intend to test it out this summer! :D
Just curious, how come the "Addon Collection" link just links back to this page? Is it supposed to?
Krevan no, it’s not. Although, this is pretty out of date now with the changes to what’s available at launch. Honestly I’d prefer to take it down as there’s no way I’ll have time to work on this with no intent to play Mage for Classic. The drop rates listed are probably wrong also as unfortunately most listed rates on the majority of classic databases are wrong.
E: honestly I can’t remember what I had linked for the addon collection but here’s a few:

Just give me a green light and I'll remove this guide for you if you'd like Jpy.
teebling just to clarify, teeb, this isn’t anything against the forum— I love barrens.chat. I just hate having a write up with my name on it with so much wrong in hindsight (every piece of information provided for drop rates for the grind targets are almost certainly wrong due to inaccurate databases) and due to changes for Classic.
E: I’d love to fix everything but it’s just not realistic, we just purchased our first house and will be moving everything in at the beginning of next month!

Oh yeah totally understand mate, I'd feel the same if I knew I wasn't going to maintain it. I'll get this down tomorrow (will involve also getting rid of a few other links in places, but I know where they all are cos I wrote them down )
Levels 56-60 you can farm Gordok Matiffs in Dire Maul North. This will generate you insane amount of leather and gold. Can leave and do DE: E lasher route as well before resetting instance. If the pathing is the same as private servers then this is by far the most optimal leveling/ gold farming you can do once you hit 52 (starting with East then North at 56).
Here's a video I found that showcases this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9ozeVq8dOs
I'm new to the fourms but I've been on Northdale for a while, and I mostly leveled with AOE famring rather than questing so I'd thought I'd comment. I dont think I will aoe farm untill 30ish, respeccing around 30. This is due to server population, no dynamic respawning, and just overall experience with farming pre-mount. I personally don't really like questing as much as aoe farming, but when clasasic releases I will be duo leveling with my brother who is rolling Warrior, so I will be focusing single target dps at low levels.
I found Aoe grinding really not that worth it untill your mount. Its just really hard to get the mobs together, and unsafe without Ice Barrier. My goal going into classic is to rush as fast as possible to 42, and thats when you can farm pirates in Tanaris, which is insane amount of exp. In my private server it was way too packed to farm consistently, but there is also other packs around that area to farm. After leveling a few, running Zul'Farak for trinket, then I plan to quest in Ungoro until 52. Once you are 52, its smooth sailing in Dire Maul till the end.
