Nope, you're not doing it wrong. There is no "right pet" for leveling. Every pet has its benefits, and it's up to the player to choose which one fits best.

End of the day it really doesn't matter at all what pet you choose for anything but min maxing and bleeding edge competitiveness. And since you are asking questions in this thread, I'm going to assume you are not already abusing layering and raiding MC, which means you are not on the bleeding edge of competitiveness, which means, congratulations! You get to pick whatever pet you want.

Which is the best hunter pet for leveling ?
- offensive - with high attack speed (cats, owls, etc)
- defensive - with better stamina, armor (bears, crocos, etc)
- general (like wolves).
Is it all about holding the threat or fast killing?...
There’s two best possible pets to level with the first one is a golden lion the second one is ( a kirt , not a second ) a treceptasaurus.
